I: Hello! Could you please help me to understand which (probably second hand) amp will be a good match for SX? I’m currently using old Rega Brio-R and while this pairing isn’t bad at all I feel that your great speaker is underpowered, especially on low volume, and can perform better. Will Exposure 3010S2D be a good match or you suggest something different, maybe Roksan or Musical Fidelity? Unfortunately I don’t have a chance to audition these before buying, so some assistance is warmly welcomed here !
NA: Hi Ivan. Thanks for the message. Which SX do you have?
Exposure is a good match for our speakers in general. The Musical Fidelity M5si is a good one. Not keen on the current Roksan amps but the Caspian was quite good. Atoll IN200 Signature or IN300 are really good.
I: Thanks for a quick response! I own SX2 and love these little beasties) Why I’m currently looking at 3010S2D specifically is that it’s offered for ~1100 GBP with optional DAC module installed. I’m currently using my old Pioneer N-50 as a DAC for streaming but it’s quite outdated so I thought that getting Exposure amp+dac could work well at least until I’ll have enough cash for a decent dedicated one.
Alternatives are:
- Cambridge 851A for 900 GBP
- Exposure 2010S2D for 440 GBP (maybe not quite an upgrade though)
- Roksan Attessa (900)
- Roksan K2 (450)
- Denon 1600NE (1080)
- Unison Research Unico Secondo (1000)
- Roksan K3 (1140, the most expensive and slightly out of budget)
- Atoll IN200 Sig (870 w/o DAC)
- Hegel H90 (760 though I heard that Hegel might be not a good match for SX2)
- MF M3si (815)
- MF A120 (450)
- Rega Elicit (prior R, 700)
- Rega Elex-R (810, might be not quite an upgrade)
NA: From that list, I’d say the Exposure 3010 and the Atoll IN200 would be the best sounding. The Unico is a nice alternative if you want something a little different. The Denon 1600 isn’t to be sniffed at either. If you get the Atoll, it’s worth getting the DAC board as it’s very good. If your Pioneer streamer has a digital output, it’s probably worth using that into the Atoll or Exposure DAC. The Exposure is BNC input I think so you will need an appropriate lead or adaptor.
I: Thanks a lot! I asked Atoll seller if there is an option to install DAC card, do you suggest its supplied DAC over Exposure? By the way, it’s IN200 Signature, not SE
NA: The signature is the latest version I think? Their DAC is excellent and has a range of inputs.
I’m sure the DAC can be retro-fitted
I: What worries me that Atoll might be not the best performer at low volume AFAIK: I usually listen to music on 8-10AM @ Brio-R due to neighbours and late night listening and while it performs not bad on 10AM+ its performance under 9AM is sub par. Given this, might Exposure be a better choice? Its MSRP was two times higher than Atoll, and I heard some good words about its low volume performance
NA: Both are great sounding amplifiers. You won’t NGO far wrong with either to be honest. Low volume performance is dependent on a few things like how the amplifier is biased: a Class A amp sounds better at low volumes, a Class B amp works better at high volumes. Most hifi amps are Class AB so should be fine at low volumes.
I: BTW, will Naim Nait be better than these? XS (60W) can be bought for 675 GBP currently while XS2 is whopping 1500+++
NA: No ! XS2 not bad. Current XS3 is awful I think. Older XS not as good as the 3010 or IN200
I: Thank you a lot again! You literally saved my life as my girlfriend was about to kill me after all these searches, comparisons and listening sessions))) how’d you describe the difference between 3010S2D and IN200 (ideally with SX2)? It will make my life much easier and help to make a more conscious decision based on my sound preferences !
I was also considering Lyngdorf thanks for their indigenous room correction systems but that’s too expensive for me(
NA: The Exposure has a bit more power but that doesn’t seem to be a factor for you if you listen at low volumes. Both have a nice, rhythmic “bounce”, the 3010 is perhaps a bit smoother whereas the Atoll maybe has a bit more sparkle
Lyngdorf amplifiers are excellent, but as you say, they are expensive!
I: Yep( I also stumbled upon this German article comparing 3010S2D to Yamaha A-S1200 and it seems that latter could also be a good fit though it is now sold at 960 GBP without onboard DAC. But it might be good as well, as onboard DAC (in Exposure case) is something to be replaced anyway at some point, and I’ll pay 140 GBP less… what do you think of it?
NA: It’s a nice amp but it is a bit “Japanese” so a bit lush but not the most exciting or engaging. It’s perfectly nice and looks great!
I: It made the situation even more tough as I listen to variety of genres from instrumental and vocal jazz, unplugged live sessions and sweet pop to IDM, punk and hard rock…
But I value emotions and timbre over technicalities and details nitpicking for sure
NA: Any of these would be quite a leap over the Brio
I: How’d you rank Exposure, Atoll and Yamaha given the last message criteria: non-fatiguing emotions, natural timbre and ability to bring smile on ones face after a long hard working day?
Sorry for such a long questioning session)
NA: Exposure (but Atoll DAC is better), Atoll then Yamaha
I: Great, thanks a lot again!
NA: No problem!
