I wanted to compare Pegasus to Ares 2, so I ordered one on AliExpress. It was promised to be shipped in 20 days and it arrived without any delays. After some burn-in time I started to listen to it in comparison with Ares 2. I tried all the inputs excepts i2s and all worked fine. I would say that both DACs on its own are very good and I prefer any of them over Hegel H390 internal DAC. So, this is how they compared in my system: Bass: on Pegasus is stronger, deeper, but also punchier, tighter, more precise. On Ares 2 is softer, like bleeding into higher lows/lower middle. Midrange: on Pegasus vocals are thinner, some instruments less warm, Ares 2 has warmer mids, nicely filled up vocals. Here I would say Pegasus vocals where closer to Hegel H390 internal DAC, than to Ares 2. Highs: similar, but Pegasus little more pronounced, sparklier, still smooth and well extended, not rolled off at all. Both DACs play with high resolution and have about the same wide and 3D soundstage. All in all, Ares 2 has more balanced response in full frequency range, naturally filled out, which is easier to listen. I got used to listen music in direct mode without any tone controls, so with Pegasus it is like you apply a V shape equalizer, although with some improvements in bass and treble. This V shape is something many people like very much. It makes the sound more dynamic and with darker background. But I am missing the fuller vocals and warmth in midrange that Ares 2 has. I would like to have DAC with punchy, precise bass, sparkly smooth highs of Pegasus, and warmth in vocals and midrange, where most of the music actually is, of Ares 2. Update: after another week warming up (in all 3 weeks) Pegasus sound improved more. Gone was that little edginess in high frequencies, midrange became warmer. As much as I loved Ares 2 I said goodbye to it and I am very happy now using Pegasus as my main DAC.
